Iron Butt "Saddle Sore 1000" Story- Part 1

Intro- Solo Riding.

Solo riding makes you realize a lot about you and the wilderness around you. When you ride alone like a wolf, hunting for new horizons. You kick start your bull (Duk, Duk, Duk..) And she roars, thumping some crazy ass beats like surround sounds. For many bikers, we love this track. We call it "our trance".

As you ride across these NH roads, you look at the rear view mirror. You realize that we are almost sabotaged by the same routine mediocrity and day to day crises. At least for that moment we know for sure, that we just decided to skip that regular routine and spend some quality time with yourself and get connected to the actual truth about life (No Bullshit).

A hypothetical scenario:-

I suppose, many of our kind, probably have become Monks by now, in search of inner-peace and are pretty settled around the northern mountains. Some special hybrids like me or you reading this shit, decided to somehow roll with a motorcycle and a manali joint instead.

As time aged, we end up creating an exuberant bonding with our machine. When we ride our bull, time actually holds no authority in our notebook. Your bull is then no longer a motorcycle, but it technically gets connected to your soul. Some may even state its a part of them.

The Story.

In Oct 2015, post bulletiapa, I decided to ride to Kerala visit my grandparents. On my way to my native place, I spent good time with my Bull trying to get to know her. We spent hours conversing regarding the route, the cattle that crossed unexpectedly, the bloody bumpy roads we took in error or the detour we missed or the gas station that never showed up as per google. I rode and I rode and I rode till Kanyakumari. I spent almost an hour looking at the blue clean sky and the vast majestic ocean right in front of me. I returned from TN route to Bangalore and back to Mumbai. During this time something struck me and I made up my mind to do "Iron Butt- Saddle Sore 1000 (1610kms) in 24 hrs for my 27th B'day.

Trust me, this may sound completely insane, but its definitely worth a shot.

The Planning- LMT offered a primary contribution towards planning my route and the Iron Butt application process. I would like to personally thank Eshan from LMT for all the assistance that was offered i.e. chalking out the perfect route, technical work that needs to be done on the bike, things to carry, what to buy etc.

Iron butt story- Part 2 (Theoretical planning).

Important things one needs to know for any successful saddle sore attempts-

* What we intent? Application to Iron Butt Association will be made by representing our club name i.e. INDIABULLRIDERS and all participating riders will be added under sub-list. The spreadsheets will display the differences.
* Its essential to get good sleep before the ride starts.
* First Aid kit with all basic medication is a must.
* Service your bikes 1 week prior to the ride (includes Throttle cable, clutch cable and clutch assembly or clutch plates change).
* Avoid last moment repairs.
* All electric work and battery related issues to be handled with utmost care as we have observed over time, most breakdowns happens due to bad wiring.
* Try minimal baggage (Tank-bag is more than enough or bungee attached backpack, with essential tools only).
* Hydration pack of 2ltrs is must for all riders.
* To gain instant energy, dry fruits, electrodes or glucose is essential as this is going to be the primary food source for this ride.
* No detox, esp Red-bull for this trip.
* Speedometer should be 100% functional on your bikes.
* Acquire a fuel station receipt Every pump you stop.
* Take a picture of the Fuel station receipt and your odometer using a regular camera or a time stamp camera.
* Break timings at pump cannot exceed more than 15 min.
* Tea breaks shouldn't exceed more than 30 min (Total of 4 breaks).
* Smoke break should exceed more than 10 min.
* Aim to accomplish 250 kms in 3 hrs.
* Rather than ripping your bull on 120 kms/h and above, its better to cruise at 100 kms/h as this can possible lead to better mileage and better performance deliverance on your bulls.

How much does it cost per person?

* Petrol expenses- 6000/-
* Stay expenses 1000/-
* Iron Butt Registration Expenses 3000/- (Includes Toughest Rider number plate, Embroider Patches, a few Iron butt stickers and Certificates).
* Intoxication is at your personal cost.

What's the time period it will take for IBA to review your ride receipts and verify this upon succeeding in doing 1600 kms in 24 hrs?

* 16 days to 8 months. As recently IBA found out a lot of false attempts from India due to which they are scrutinizing each application closely before certifying.

The Route Plan.

* Nov 19th, 2015 (Thursday) at 7 pm. Flag Off Point is from Hotel Fountain to Pune. (Hotel Stay).

* Nov 20th 2015 (Friday) shoot out before Pune Dehu bypass Rd to belgaum.

* Belgaum to Tumkar IOC Station (Coordinates 13.0909830 77.3995430) without entering Bangalore Nice Rd. Refuel and head back to Mumbai.

1600+ kms and a 24 hr journey.

P.S. I ll be attaching a route description.

Iron Butt Story- Part 4

What really happened.

A trial round is always recommended post service to check how your bull behaves on higher speeds. So along with Mr Kothari a.k.a. PC from Mumbai chapter who was intending on doing this ride with me initially, but couldn't due to family emergency. I did my first test ride for Iron Butt. Mumbai to Surat, not too long, but it gave me a fair idea on what to work on. For 250 kms, we revd our engines, both high and low. It was crazy...

During the ride, I felt uncomfortable riding the bike at higher speeds, I felt it lacked the weight for this type of journey. Hence due to my personal experience, I decided to completely saddle up the bike with tools and everything which I would normally carry during rides, before I start the ride. The weight of the saddle & the bike, made me more confident while drifting on higher speeds during Iron Butt.

Things I carried with me-

1- Complete Tool Kit.
2- Spares.
3- Kellogg Muesli (Dry Fruits and Honey).
4- Dry Fruits Packet.
5- Snickers 5 bars.
6- Orbit Chewing Gum
7- Tiff-in Box and spoon.
8- Glucose D
9- Johnson and Johnson No rash baby powder.
10- Motul 15W50 5100 Ester oil is recommended.

On Nov 19th 2015, after finishing my projects at office, I hussled to LMT for last min work on the bike. I wanted a USB charger and some add ons on the bike. Trust me folks last min work on the bike is a complete no no. I experienced the same issue. I had to connect USB charger to the bike and I couldn't finish it on time. I had planned to leave for pune around 7 pm however due to this unfinished work, I left around 8:30 pm. I know this may not make much of a difference, since I am leaving the next day but I had to find a decent hotel too before midnight, this complicated things a lil bit but by God's grace things went really well.

Before I start my ride- I prayed to God, so that he keeps me safe and protects me during this journey.

[i]Psalms 91 (From the Holy Bible).

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says theLord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Amen.....

And I kick Started my Chrome to be the Bad Ass Iron Butt Biker of IBR.

Iron Butt Story- Part 5 (Why do you need to stay at a hotel before the ride)

I reached pune at midnight. I tried searching for a hotel that will fulfill my needs for a pleasant night stay and a fresh beginning tomorrow. I wanted it to be closer to my start point at any cost, so that there is limited hassles when I am about to leave. I mean acquiring all the related receipts for my start point etc.

Most people over-stress themselves on other areas without realizing, "The key to a successful Iron butt is Sleep Well and Feel Well".

Staying back at a good hotel before your ride helps u to remove all tiredness from your body which is very essential for this type of ride. I personally wouldn't recommend Red-bull, coz after a few hours, exhaustion starts to kick in and it completely drains your body. Repeated consumption of Red-bull during this type of ride can lead to anxiety and can make u feel dizzy n tired.

Since you will be revving and riding your bike very fast for a very long time. Staying alert might be difficult task, hence I recommend not to use Red-bull.

Anyway back to the story- I stayed at Hotel Kasanova INN. The hotel owner became a good friend as he loved the place Coorg being a Mangalorian. My bike apparently had a Coorg sticker. He offered me complimentary tea and water and wished me a safe ride.

Iron Butt Story- Part 6 (The ride start day)

luckily outside a few meters from the hotel, I came across a HDFC ATM on my way and a few kms behind I found a pump too. So I filled up my tank and Jerry can for back up fuel in case if I am stuck.

My start point link- https://goo.gl/maps/kVwhf7gXZCT2

Although I did change my LS2 visor from a Mercury one to a Clear one but during night riding, you are bond to keep your visor up for road clarity.

I was indeed late due to rains and shit load traffic before Tumkar-Nelamangala RD, I never had any intention to finish the IBA Saddle Sore 1000 challenge, All I really cared out was to celebrate my B day with our IBR Bangalore brothers, this whole Iron Butt Challenge fantasy was indeed set up only for that, and I thought in the end if I can finish it on my 27th bday.. its as good as cherry on ice.

I reached Bangalore around 10:42 PM IST. My U turn point https://goo.gl/maps/CJdAeYAYuMG2

I waited for 45 min for Nujo and gang to come to my U turn point. It wouldn't have been cool, if I had left without meeting them. So I waited... the results were deeply inspiring... I did Bangalore back to my start point in less than 9 hrs. I was riding non stop on 130/kmph.

Thank you IBR Mumbai & Bangalore chapter for all your prayer & well wishes. Without your encouragement I wouldn't have made it.... Special thanks to my friend Denzil, who supported me throughout and my family too.

I reached the end point https://goo.gl/maps/kVwhf7gXZCT2 at 09:44 am IST on 21/11/2015 completing 1705 KMS in 22 hours on my Classic 500 Chrome.
