On a plan to just go far from everywhere to not to waste brain and to relive moments away from the routine nightmares. We have decided to roam in the Himalayas for one full week...

In the Zanskar valley.


1-Kargil to RANGDUM via Suru Valley (Suru River, parkachik, Nun & Kuna) 6-7Hours

2- RANGDUM to Padum, Padum is main town via penzila Pass.

3- Padum to Karsha monastery , Stongday monastery and Zangla ruin palace. 6-7hours. (Try doing pipcha)

4- Padum to Bardan, Raru back to Padum after lunch visit Sani Kaniska stupa.

5- Padum to RANGDUM.

6- RANGDUM to Kargil.

7-Kargil to Srinagar


Mostly our itinerary will remain as above, there might be some changes involved in regards to the roads and time and situation. 

We have 8 slots for the above ride, 4 are taken. 4 more available. Interested members can join the ride based on their availability of time and dates.

As we planned to ride in a compact group, we have max limit of 8-10 persons. Open slots will be entertained based on seniority/riding experience and in consultation with respective Chapter Heads.

Eligibility Criteria

1.The participant must have completed couple of rides with IBR in the last 2 years.
2.The participant must attend all 4 mandatory meets before the ride have to be attended by all the participant.
3.Bikes must be serviced 2 weeks prior to the ride i.e. 20th May 2018 which will follow an inspection during the meet. 

Now lets talk about rules and regulations of this ride.

1. This ride is only for IBR Members and no relatives, friends etc are allowed as riders and pillions unless agreed by Admins.
2. The Itinerary is set and no deviation will be allowed unless absolutely necessary.
3. The riders should listen to the Group Leader and co-ordinators to avoid any confusion during the ride.
4. This is a self Sponsored ride so carry enough cash and avoid relying on ATM’s.
5. Full Mask Helmet, Armoured Riding Jacket, Protective Gloves, Knee Guards and High Ankle Boots are mandatory requirement.
6. Bike must be serviced thoroughly, and tyres must have enough treads to sail through the entire journey.
7. Everyone must carry their own set of tools and minimum set of spares to cope up with the breakdowns.

Note : All participation will have to fulfill the eligibility criteria set. Any exceptions will be at sole discretion of the Admin and chapter heads and their decision will be final.

Kargil Zanskar HighWay declared open for 2018.

The Kargil – Zanskar highway has reopened today for vehicular traffic. This is the first time that the Kargil – Zanskar highway has reopened in March. A fact that goes to show, how less the snowfall has been this year.

Zanskar Valley, nestled in the remote corner of Ladakh, is one of the most enchanting places to visit in Himalayas. It is located on the eastern corner of J&K state and is separated from Ladakh by Zanskar mountain range. In ancient times, Zanskar & Ladakh together were part of kingdom of Guje in Western Tibet. It is connected through Kargil by road and Darcha in Himachal Pradesh by a trekking route over Shingo La pass. Once you visit this wonderland, you will just fall in love with its wide open vistas, fresh aqua blue water streams gushing through the valley, the compelling aura of total remoteness and the massive glaciers which appears to be just a touch away.


Best Routes to reach Zanskar Valley

Srinagar – Kargil – Padum is the best & fastest route to reach Zanskar Valley. However, one can also travel from Manali – Leh Highway to reach Leh and then travel from Leh to Kargil – Padum route. In case, you are planning to come from Manali side and exit from Srinagar side, then plan the Zanskar Valley trip through Leh – Kargil route. Otherwise, shortest route to reach Zanskar Valley is through Srinagar – Kargil only.
There are couple of new routes to Zanskar Valley which are under construction right now and expected to be completed in next 2-3 years. One route runs from (Himachal) Darcha to Shingo La to Padum and the other route runs along the Zanskar river (Chadar trek), that is, Leh – Nimoo – Chilling – Padum. The route from Darcha – Padum runs along side Phugtal trek and Darcha – Padum trekking route. So, once open, you can also pay visit to Phuktal monastery while coming from Darcha side to Padum. Currently, the 40 KM route from Darcha to Shingo La has been opened and BRO is working to connect rest of the route to Padum beyond Shingo La. The route from Leh to Chilling to Padum will provide year round connectivity to Zanskar Valley through Leh when Pensi La pass gets closed in winters. Once completed, it will be big change in the lives of local people who have to remain land locked for almost 5-6 months in an year in winters.


The shortest route to reach Zanskar Valley from Delhi is to travel first to Srinagar and then take Srinagar – Leh highway to reach Kargil. Once you reach Kargil, you have to travel rest of 250 KM to Padum on Kargil – Padum road. However, the 434 KM long Srinagar – Kargil – Leh Highway remains closed for about 6 months in an year starting from middle of November to early May due to presence of heavy snow on Zojila pass. Kargil – Padum road also pass through Pensi La pass which also remains closed for entire winter due to heavy snowfall on it. Both Pensi La pass and Zojila pass starts receiving snowfall in the month of November and it becomes extremely difficult for BRO to clear the snow in winters which results in closure of both these roads.

As winter resides, BRO begins the snow clearance process in March and repair the damaged roads, bridges and other parts of the highway. Finally, after completing this rigorous job of snow clearance, BRO announces the opening of Srinagar – Leh Highway generally around early May. Pensi La Pass, connecting Kargil with Padum in Zanskar Valley, may take another month or so to open as snow clearance operations starts later on it. It is around starting June, the snow from Penzi La pass gets cleared and Kargil – Padum road is also thrown open for vehicular traffic.


Hence, the season to travel to Zanskar Valley is only between June to September/October. In the early season, the roads are in bad conditions and take couple of weeks after opening to stabilise for safe travels. In winters, the only way to reach Zanskar Valley is through long freezing walk over frozen Zanskar river popularly known as Chadar trek.

Many people traveling to Zanskar Valley and Ladakh prefer a self drive car or a bike ride to travel. The main reason is to live the adventure of driving or riding through one of the toughest and adventurous terrains accessible in India by road. You can take your own or rented, car or bike to Zanskar Valley but one must be careful while driving or riding through slushy roads, snow and water crossing or nallas. Also, it is always handy to learn little maintenance tasks of your vehicle prior to the start of this remote & arduous journey. The road from Parkachik to Padum is nothing but a dirt track and offer a very bumpy drive.


Believe me when I say that the road from Kargil to Padum will definitely make you pray at least once “when will it finish !!”


In case, you are planning for a journey to Padum from Srinagar with night halts at Kargil and Rangdum, I will suggest that you plan it while coming back from Padum to Kargil / Leh / Srinagar. Rangdum is a harsh place to spend a night without proper acclimatization. Hence, you might suffer a sleepless night especially when you are coming from Srinagar side. So, this option is only preferred when you are either coming back from Padum or you have been acclimatized enough within Ladakh and coming to Padum from Leh.

When traveling from Srinagar side, it is best to make a two day trip to Padum with overnight halt at Kargil. I know the 12 hr journey to could be tiresome especially when you have roads which can never let you sleep. However, it is still the safe option considering AMS issues in Rangdum. Padum village is less harsh and better equipped with medical facilities in case you may need any.


Fuel or Petrol Pumps in Zanskar Valley

It is fairly easy to find fuel or petrol on Srinagar – Kargil road but once you leave Kargil and enter Suru Valley, you will not find any petrol pump till Padum. Even in Padum, the availability of fuel could be limited at times and they provide you a limited capacity of fuel only just enough to reach back to Kargil. Black fuel is also available at times at Rangdum village. Hence, it is very important that you top up at Kargil and then you must top up at Padum or fill in whatever they are offering during your visit.


ATMs Availability in Zanskar Valley

There is one J&K bank ATM in Padum market. However, ATMs are available at Ganderbal, Drass, Kargil apart from Leh and Srinagar ATMs. You should carry enough cash with you in Zanskar Valley because ATMs at these limited places can run out of money or become un-operational at any day or time. Hence, it is better to carry enough cash.
Medical Facilities in Zanskar Valley
Kargil has a a very decent hospital and so as Padum which also has a big govt. hospital. I wanted to go to Padum hospital due to AMS issues. Hence, carry your basic medical kit with you and avoid any heroics because basic medical help is also hard to find in these remote places of Himalayas.
Mobile Connectivity in Zanskar Valley
Kargil has mobile connectivity and once you cross Sankoo, you enter a dead zone where there will be no phone or mobile connectivity. Only BSNL postpaid connections work in Padum, Zanskar Valley and it is fairly limited to about 15-20 odd KMs around Padum only.

Day 1.... Mega Adventure, Zanskar Ride -- Part 2

Our Mega Adventure started on the 1st of June 2018. The first leg of the journey was to fly out of Hyderabad, reach Delhi, then take another flight out of Delhi to Srinagar. Our flight from Hyderabad to Delhi got delayed by 4 hours. So we were all hoping to reach Delhi and catch our flight to Srinagar on time. Luckily we managed.






On reaching Srinagar heard there was a curfew in the old part of the city. Some how managed a pre-paid taxi and reached our Safe-express Hub, were are bikes were waiting for us. We saddled up and geared up. The moment we filled our bike's bellies with fuel one of the Bike started leaking. Can you guess whose bike it can be... ???



Yes you guessed it right, it was our Founder's saabs bike.. ( Anil YVS ). The 1st breakdown of our MA is here. We found an amazing mechanic in Parimpora area of Srinagar. He fixed his bike in no time.. ( time taken to repaid the bhasad -- 1.5 hours ). Our target for the day was to reach Sankoo. We had to leave the city, then head towards Sonmarg, cross the mighty Zojila, then cross Drass , Kargil and then  reach Sankoo. ETA ( was set around 9 pm )


Our ride started and we were late, by the time we left Srinagar it was 2 in the noon. Our 1st stop was Sonmarg, around 70 km from Srinagar. We halted next to a very beautiful garden, we had to cross a bridge and get into the space. Here we had the 1st taste of the famous kahwa chai, to go along with it Maggie. The food and the chai was total bliss. We could see snow capped mountains surrounding us and there was cold chill in the air. Keeping our spirits high we planned to move on and cross the Mighty Zojila.

Reached Sankoo at 11:45 pm. After taking many halts and breaks. Climbing the Zojila was a daunting task. We were brave enough to conquer it. The terrain was dusty, the so called feared Shaitan Nala was not flowing to the brim. We could manage to cross it without any hassle. Well after crossing numerous vehicles, dusty roads, crazy tempo drivers,  trucks, army convoys, multiple water crossings at last we conquered the Mighty Zojila. 





Some more gyaan with the help of Wiki -- Zoji La is 15 km from Sonmarg and provides a vital link between Ladakh and Kashmir Valley. It runs at an elevation of approximately 3,528 metres (11,575 ft), and is the second highest pass after Fotu La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It is often closed during winter, though the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to extend traffic to most parts of the year. The Beacon Force unit of the BRO is responsible for clearing and maintenance of the road during Winter.


Some thing about Zojila for you guys ( Zoji La is a high mountain pass in Jammu and Kashmir, India, located on the Indian National Highway 1D between Srinagar and Leh in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range. )

After crossing Zojila, we came to a Kargil Check point, where in we had to register our names and bike numbers and few personal details. Post completing the formalities at the check post we moved on towards Drass.


Dras  is a town in the Kargil District of Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir on NH 1 (former name NH 1D before renumbering of all national highways) between Zoji La pass and Kargil town. It is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh". The town shot into prominence in the summer of 1999 following Pakistani army incursions into Jammu and Kashmir. The Kargil War saw the town being shelled by the Pakistani army and the war ended with the Indian Army recapturing the areas surrounding the town and the Kargil district. The government of Jammu & Kashmir's official spelling of the town is Drass.


Dras town is located at 34.428152°N 75.75118°E. It is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh". It is at a height of 10,800 feet (3,300 m) Dras lies in the centre of the valley of the same name (Dras valley). Dras is 140 km from Srinagar and 63 km from Sonmarg. Kargil town is further 56 km after Dras on the national highway NH 1 from Srinagar towards Leh.

After few long hours of riding most of us were feeling sleepy and we decided to halt for some garam garam chai, so we found a nice place on the highway. We had chai and garam veg pakoda and said our goodbyes to the owner of the hotel and moved on towards Sankoo.


We cracked open our rum bottles that we picked them from Delhi airport. We all discussed the day's ride and planned the next day. We decided to call it a rest day. See the local surroundings and chill in Sankoo. We didn't knew Sankoo was such a beautiful town. Next morning we got to see the town to its fullest. Trust me, we all were spellbound to see the beauty of the place. Our window in our room opened to a beautiful landscape.. pictures will follow so sit back and enjoy.
